Giants do Something Right: Welcome Joe Schoen!
The New York Giants have been one of the laughing stocks of the NFL for the last half decade. Dave Gettleman made a fool of himself during his tenure as general manager. We have covered his tenure extensively, but now it is officially time to close the books on that era of Giants football. Near the end of this past week, the New York Giants hired Buffalo Bills Assistant GM, Joe Schoen (pronounced “Shane”) as their new general manager. For the first time in years, the New York Giants did the process the right way and made a tremendous hire.
The Process
One worry that many Giants fans had was that the Mara’s would go about this process the wrong way as they have done so many times in the past. Throughout the season, fans were terrified of an internal hire (e.g. Kevin Abrams or Chris Mara). These guys have been instrumental in making the Giants the disaster they have been. However, once Joe Judge was fired, it is evident that the Giants were going to do this the right way. All three finalists for the job were from outside of the organization. And what was even more amazing, was that they could not have gone wrong with any one of them. Joe Schoen beat out 49ers assistant gm, Adam Peters, and Chiefs executive director of player personnel, Ryan Poles.

What Joe Schoen Brings
Working with Brandon Beane, Joe Schoen was instrumental in turning the Buffalo Bills into what they are today. He believes in building through the draft. He understands the importance of getting draft picks right, doing due diligence on every prospect, and bringing in the right guys. From the reading and research I have done, everyone seems to agree on some key points about Schoen: no one will outwork him and he is a very good evaluator of talent. That is something that has been lacking in the Giants front office since Dave Gettleman got hired.
Brandon Beane knew he had something special in Joe Schoen. The two worked hand in hand to make Buffalo one of the best teams in the NFL with one of the league’s top quarterbacks. Beane said of Schoen back in 2019 (quote from SNY) “He’s going to be a GM. The thing about him is that he’s smart enough to know that he’s still learning and growing, and he’s trying to get stronger at his craft. He wants to be totally ready when he gets in there.”
Priorities

Right now, Schoen’s top priority is finding the next head coach of the New York Giants. So far, the Giants have completed initial interviews with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. As of this morning, they interviewed Cincinatti Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. The consensus seems that it is Brian Daboll’s job to lose. Obviously, both Daboll and Frazier have a recent connection to Joe Schoen, but so does Anarumo. Both he and Schoen were a part of the Dolphins organization. Anarumo was the Dolphins defensive backs coach the same time that Joe Schoen was there. Schoen is clearly looking at coaches he is familiar with. He knows that they can do to build a winning team.
Final Thoughts
I am a big fan of this hire as are many Giants fans and people around the NFL. The Giants went about this process the right way and are continuing to do so in the head coach search. The Maras are doing the right thing by letting Schoen do his job and have total control of this operation. It is not going to be an overnight fix, but the Giants are finally starting to look up. It will be a difficult task to rebuild this team with no cap space, aging veterans, and no true franchise quarterback. However, it seems as if Joe Schoen is definitely the right man to lead that rebuild.
