The moment we’ve all been waiting for is here. Football is finally back. We have a real sport that (might) play from start to finish in one run. In classic fashion the Pats start the season off with a division rival in the Dolphins. In what is considered somewhat of a rebuilding year, they couldn’t start the season against a better team. There is a lot unknown, and the Dolphins are a relatively weak team to try some things out against.
A New Offense
This offense is going to be a completely new look from what everyone’s seen in the past. Brian Flores seemed to have them figured out last year in week 17, and he won’t know what hit him on Sunday. Cam is going to come out guns blazing, and Josh McDaniels is going to be trying out all sorts of new things in this offense. With Cam’s arm this offense is going to look a lot more vertical than it was with all the 2 step drops with Brady. Don’t sleep on Demiere Byrd making an impact early. He already has built some chemistry with Cam Newton after being a former Panther, and his speed will help take the top off the defense. The rookie tight ends, Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene might make an early impact too, but don’t expect the Pats to show everything they have right in week 1. September is going to be their preseason, and they’re going to feel their way around through this game.
DeVante Parker vs. Stephon Gilmore
The matchup to watch in this game is going to be DeVante Parker v.s. Stephon Gilmore. Parker made Gilmore look pedestrian in the last game of the regular season, and Gilmore is going to have something to prove. Parker’s health may not be 100%, but that doesn’t make him any less talented of a receiver. The rest of the receivers should be handled easily by the Pats secondary. The Pats did struggle mightily against the run last season, and they lost a lot of talent in the front 7. Hightower, Van Noy, Roberts, Shelton. They were all big run stuffers. Now they’ll have to rely on the likes of Ja’Whaun Bentley, Byron Cowart, Brandon Copeland and Deatrich Wise to stop the run. With the Pats losing talent at an already weak spot, the Dolphins added firepower in the run game. The combination of Jordan Howard and Matt Breida won’t be an easy one to stop. The wild card will be if we get good ol’ pick throwing Ryan Fitzpatrick, or Fitzmagic.
It’s hard to predict what the outcome of an almost completely new team will be, but here goes nothing. 27-21 Patriots.
