Florida men allegedly hack gas pumps
Florida men? Of course.
Well well well, what do we have here? Another story about a Florida man… or men! I wasn’t going to write about another piece of news from Florida, but this has me beat! As I was scrolling through Instagram, I stumbled upon a post about a Florida man. The caption told me everything I needed to know. Basically, a Florida man had allegedly “hacked” fuel pumps to lower their costs. When I did more research, I found that it was actually four Florida men that had been arrested for allegedly hacking gas pumps.
How did they do it?
We’ve all seen the huge jump in costs for gas across the states, or my wallet has at least. I don’t condone theft, but as a human working for my buck…JOKING! Anyways, it isn’t just one man that is being accused of committing the crimes. What the social media account lacked in providing, nypost.com made up for! According to NYPost, “Four Florida men were busted for installing devices inside gas pumps that dropped prices down to nearly nothing — an alarming trend…” A trend of supposedly hacking gas pumps? After looking further into it, apparently this isn’t the first time someone has hacked a gas pump. Just from looking at title’s, someone in Detroit hacked a gas pump in 2018.
I wanted to learn more, so I did more research for us! According to Complex.com, “[t]he alleged thefts took place earlier this month at a Circle K in Lutz”. For those unfamiliar with Florida’s layout, Lutz is a city in Tampa along our west coast. The article continues by stating “Ned Bowman, the president of the Florida Petroleum Marketers Association, explained how the devices work. ‘They go in and they change the pulsator. The pulsator is the device that is inside the gas pump that regulates the flow of the fuel”. I knew technology was advanced, but I did not know that someone could hack a gas pump. I suppose it makes sense because someone had to manually adjust the price when the gas-costs increased!
