Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Preview

I am back after a crazy packed weekend of bowl games. Now it is time to talk about the bowls taken place this week. The first bowl game I will be previewing will be between Kent State (7-6) and Wyoming (6-6). We have a MAC team going up against a team from the Mountain West conference. With that being said here is my preview for the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Kent State

This high up tempo Kent State offense has been fun to watch during the entire 2021 season. Golden Flashes’ offense is led by Dustin Crum, and he has been a fantastic piece for this Kent State offense. Kent State is coming off of their MAC title loss against Northern Illinois. I am worried about this Kent State team going up against Wyoming. Kent State has some talent as well on offense such as Marquez Cooper and Xavier Williams as their talent in the backfield. The Golden Flashes also have one of the deepest group of wide receivers that a team like Wyoming has faced this season. A lot of good can happen in this matchup for Kent State, but there are so big question marks as well.

The Golden Flashes have lost their conference title game, and it is tough to fight that off and move forward. This bowl game doesn’t mean much to them, so I don’t know how much I trust Kent State in this one. If this offense plays up to the level that they have all season long, it will be a tough task for Wyoming. However, I do see Wyoming’s defense stepping up in a big way in this one.

Wyoming

Wyoming is a very run heavy team and they are led by junior running back Xazavian Valladay. Valladay has 984 rushing yards to go along with five touchdowns on the season. He also averages 5.2 yard per carry as well. This Wyoming team has been very fun at times to watch this year. They go up against Kent State who is one of the worst rush defenses in the country. Kent State is ranked 216th in rushing yards allowed per game. Wyoming averages about 195.1 rushing yards per game. This could be a recipe of disaster for this Kent State defense.

However, Wyoming’s defense is good, but not great from time to time. They defend very well against the pass as they are ranked 25th in passing yards allowed per game. So, for the Cowboys they will need to keep Kent State’s offense off of the field and dominate the time of possession. One has to give between the Kent State passing offense and the Wyoming passing defense. Look for the Cowboys to try and dominate the time of possession in this bowl matchup.

Prediction:

Wyoming is currently a 3 point favorite with the over/under at 59. My lean is the over for this one. I think both teams can score but I am worried about Wyoming slowing the pace of this game down. My official play is Wyoming -3 as the Cowboys are 5-1 against the spread in their last six bowl games. I think Wyoming wins this game by a touchdown and Kent State doesn’t have much to play for.
