Everton FC: deadline day targets to keep an eye on

With summer transfer window deadline day upon us, English football is experiencing one of the most chaotic days of the year.

Clubs, fans, players and reporters are all locked in today in anticipation of moves that could make or break a season.

Everton have had a hectic summer already. The Toffees could still make a few key additions before the window slams shut tonight.

Without further ado, here are a few Everton related situations to keep an eye on as deadline day unfolds.

Everton Target #1: Ainsley Maitland-Niles

With Ainsley Maitland-Niles making it clear that he wants a change of scenery, rumors have been flying that Everton could be his next destination.

With Maitland-Niles supposedly unhappy at Arsenal and Everton needing more competition at right back, the move makes sense on paper.

Paul Joyce has reported that the move would be a loan with an option to buy. However, the most recent reports suggest that Arsenal are driving a hard bargain.

Everton reportedly remain interested, but we will have to wait and see if Arsenal are willing to part ways with the 24-year-old.

Everton Target #2: Salomón Rondón

With Moise Kean having returned to Juventus, Everton appear to be interested in adding a backup striker. One name that has been thrown around is that of Salomón Rondón.

The 31-year-old knows Rafael Benítez well, having worked with the manager at Newcastle and Dalian Professional.

The Venezuelan international was last in the Premier League in 2018-19. He scored 11 goals in 32 league appearances that year, his most productive output in the English topflight.

If Everton are able to add a striker before the window closes, it seems likely Rondon would be the one.

Everton Target #3: Luis Díaz

There has been a lot of recent talk about Everton’s interest in FC Porto winger Luis Díaz.

According to journalist Pipe Sierra, Everton are prepared to make one last bid for the player today.

As Sierra’s tweet suggests, Everton’s offer would include a fee and James Rodriguez going back the other way.

Still just 24, Díaz is a talented young player. If Benítez has decided that James is not part of his plans, it would be best to capitalize on his value in a move like this one.

The links to Díaz seem a bit more tenuous than the ones to Rondon or Maitland-Niles, but this deal should not be completely ruled out.

Final Thoughts

As fans of English football will know, just about anything can happen on deadline day.

Despite some financial difficulties, Everton have looked to strengthen their squad all window long. These moves offer some potential options for the Toffees to continue with that process.

There is still a long way to go before the window closes at 11 pm BST/6 pm EST tonight.

Will Everton have added any of these names by that point? Only time will tell.
