Welcome back to another week and another article giving my predictions on the English Premier League. We got a plethora of matchups to talk about that are taking place this week. With that being said here are my predictions for matchday 2 in the English Premier League.
Record From Last Week: 5-5 (Overall Record 5-5)
Premier League Saturday Slate:
Liverpool vs Burnley
Liverpool is back at Anfield for the first time this season. Last year it was Burnley who ended Liverpool’s 68 match unbeaten streak at Anfield. So Liverpool is definitely out looking for revenge this time around. Liverpool has also only lost their home opener three times in the last fifty five seasons. This team is healthy and will be more than ready to take on this defensive minded Burnley squad. Also Burnley looked rough in the second half in their loss to Brighton last week.
Prediction: Liverpool wins 2-0
Aston Villa vs Newcastle
Both of these teams need a win to bounce back after last week. For Aston Villa you lose to Watford and you have to think to yourself what can we do to improve. You were down 2-0 at the end of the first half, and then down one point 3-0 in the second half. The two goals you scored help put you in the right direction moving forward. You do need to play to the level that you did in the last twenty minutes of the game the entire way against Newcastle.
For Newcastle they looked great in the first half against West Ham. They went into the locker room with the lead and then it disappeared in the second half. Giving up three goals in a fifteen minute span costs any team, but for a team like Newcastle giving up that many goals in that time span is detrimental. If Newcastle plays like they did in the first half in the West Ham game they will be a tough team to play against.
Prediction: This game ends in a 1-1 draw.
Crystal Palace vs Brentford
This is the first meeting between the two sides since 1964. That is a long time between facing one another. Brentford made a statement in their first game ever in the Premier League. They shutout Arsenal at home and now head on the road to Crystal Palace to play their first ever road game. Crystal Palace got demolished by Chelsea, but not for nothing what else do you expect from a matchup between the Champions League winners and a team like Crystal Palace.
This game will show us how “legit” Brentford will be in this league this year. If they are able to play well on the road against Crystal Palace not because its Palace, but because they are playing on the road in the best league in England. If they can compete on the road then Brentford will be a team to watch out for this year.
Prediction: 0-0 Draw between the two sides.
Leeds vs Everton
Leeds United will look to bounce back this week in their matchup with Everton. Everton is coming off a 3-1 win last week against Southampton. Leeds got shellacked by Manchester United and will try to bounce back with a win at home. For Everton they have been able to keep a clean sheet in six out of their last eight Premier League games. They have also failed to score a goal in four out of their last six road games as well.
Leeds is 4-0-1 in their last five Premier League games. Everton is 2-1-2 in their last five Premier League games. Also in the two teams last ten meetings with each other it has led to four wins by Leeds, three wins by Everton, and three draws. I think this game will be a lot closer than people think. The battle of goaltenders here will be the story. Calvin Pickford looked solid against Southampton and Illan Meslier will look to bounce back in a big way.
Prediction: Leeds scores one late and wins 1-0.
Manchester City vs Norwich City
Manchester City is looking to bounce back after their loss at Tottenham. For Norwich City you got Liverpool at home and got blown up. Now you got the team that has won three out of the last four titles in their stadium. That is a tough stretch to start off the season. Also in the last three times that Norwich City has played Manchester City on the road they have been outscored 14-1. This matchup does not favor Norwich unfortunately.
Prediction: Manchester City wins 3-0.
Brighton vs Watford
Brighton vs Watford is a game that I don’t necessarily have marked on my calendar. However I am looking forward to seeing this play out. Both teams started the campaign last week with a win so I am excited to see what each team has in store for this week. In their last thirteen league meetings the home team is 3-6-4 which is not a good sign for Brighton. Even though Brighton has never lost a home match to Watford (1-3-0) and only five total goals have been scored in those matches. I think Watford is a lot better this year than they have been in previous times in the Premier League. I am also still not sold on Brighton as I still believe they are destined for relegation.
Prediction: Watford wins 1-0.
Premier League Sunday Slate:
Southampton vs Manchester United
The last time that these two teams faced off we saw one of the worst games for Southampton ever. Southampton lost to Manchester United 9-0. That is not a typo ladies and gentleman. United has also gotten a lot better than they were a season ago. Manchester United is unbeaten in their last 26 Premier League matches (17 wins and 9 draws). They are looking to tie to longest away unbeaten streak in English top flight history when Arsenal went on a 27 game run between April 2003 to September 2004. I don’t think that United are due for a loss. Manchester United should see the debut of Raphael Varane and hopefully they start Jadon Sancho this week. We could see another big time scoring output for United again this week.
Prediction: United wins 4-0.
Wolves vs Tottenham
This is the game of the week and no its not because of the players on the field. Nuno Espirito Santo who is now the manager of Tottenham, was the Wolves manager from 2017-2021. This is a big game for Wolves, and I expect this to be a physical match between the two sides. Wolves should want to beat their old manager in the worst way, and Nuno should want his squad excited for this matchup. One stat that I have seen that is making me a little weary is the fact that the Wolves have only beaten Tottenham once at home since 2010. They are 1-2-4 in games at home against Tottenham since 2010. I think Wolves will have their hearts all out on the pitch here, but I don’t know if it will be enough to come out on top.
Prediction: Tottenham squeaks by with a 2-1 win.
Arsenal vs Chelsea
Arsenal could use a solid performance from their squad after the “no-show” at Brentford last week. This week they take on Chelsea who they beat in both of their matchups last season. Chelsea though is a completely different team this time around and are poised for a win. The Gunners need their guys to be in form or else they will get crushed by Chelsea. If Arsenal puts out the starting XI they did against Brentford, they will get embarrassed. I think the fans in Emirates Stadium will be a major factor. We should see the Chelsea debut of Romelu Lukaku. Also I think we will see Odergaard next week for Arsenal. Either way this will be an exciting London derby for the two squads.
Prediction: Chelsea wins 2-0.
Premier League Monday Slate:
West Ham United vs Leicester City
For a monday game this is going to be a real good one. West Ham United right now is one of my favorite clubs that isn’t my own. I look forward to watching this team every week. Leicester City is coming off their 1-0 win over Wolves last week. Now their on the road and they were a good road team last season. They had the third most points in road games behind both Manchester City and Manchester United. However, this year I am expecting the usual drop off from this Leicester squad. I think West Ham at home is going to be a force to be reckoned with this season. This team looks hungry and I believe they should be considered the better team right now.
Prediction: West Ham wins 2-1.
