EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl

Nothing like a nice bowl game in Hawaii on Christmas Eve. The Hawaii Bowl for me is a bowl I look forward to every year, because I love something to watch during the Holidays. On Christmas Eve there is really no sports to watch about, so I turn to the Hawaii Bowl for my entertainment. We have a good one here as we have the AAC going up against the Mountain West. The matchup is between Memphis (6-6) and Hawaii (6-7). Hawaii playing at the Hawaii bowl just seems right. With that being said here is my preview for the EasyPost Hawaii Bowl.

Memphis

Memphis started the year on a good note but losing six out of their last nine is a horrendous way to end a good 3-0 start. The Tigers have struggled defensively as they were abysmal in their last nine games. Memphis has given up 24 or more points in eight out of their last nine games. Their defense has not been good since the losing streak started. However, Offensively the Tigers have been the bright spot of this team. Their passing offense is ranked seventeenth in the nation in passing yards as they nearly average 300 passing yards per game.

Seth Henigan their freshman quarterback has had a pretty good freshman year. Henigan has thrown for 3,322 passing yards to go along with a touchdown/interception ratio of 25/8. Memphis has struggled in their last two road games offensively however as they have only managed to score twenty points combined in those two games. There will be growing pains with starting a freshman quarterback, but Memphis will look to end the year on the right note. This passing attack will need to get going early on as they take on a Hawaii team that allows on average 289.7 passing yards per game. Memphis will have to take advantage early offensively if they want to win this bowl matchup.

Hawaii

Hawaii won their final two games to become bowl eligible. They are also the only team to make a bowl game with a losing record this season. A lot of turmoil has been going on with the Rainbow Warriors off of the field. Their leading rusher Dae Dae Hunter and starting quarterback Chevan Cordeiro have both entered the transfer portal.

They both entered the transfer portal early due to disagreement between them and their head coach Todd Graham. So, this is hard for me because what kind of Hawaii team are we going to see. They haven’t played without Cordeiro or Hunter this season, what will this team look like in the Hawaii Bowl. Do we see a Hawaii team that doesn’t want to play for their head coach, or will we see a team motivated to end the year on the right note? This Hawaii team looks like they might be on the verge of shambles.

Prediction:

Memphis is a 8.5 point favorite in this matchup with the over/under set at 55.5. My lean here has to be the under without a doubt. You got two offenses that you don’t know if you can trust them in this matchup. Memphis is inconsistent offensively away from home, and Hawaii has too many different pieces that will be playing snaps that didn’t play a ton for them all season long. With that being said I am going to ride with the history. The history is that it is difficult to play Hawaii on the island so with that being said even with the question marks, I am taking Hawaii +8.5. This will be a close game in my opinion and no matter what happens Hawaii keeps it within the number.
