Dodgers Dustin May Dazzles in Season Debut, Fantasy Impact After One Start
Dodgers Dustin May was dominant in his season debut, what fantasy value does he offer?
The Los Angeles Dodgers are coming off a World Series championship and set to defend their crown. As they enter the 2021 season, the Dodgers are loaded from a starting pitching perspective.
As camp was coming to a close, there was a battle to become the team’s number five starter. Dustin May ultimately won the final spot edging out David Price and Tony Gonsolin.
Last night, May made his first start of the season looking to solidify himself as a legitimate Major League starter.
The Dodgers played the Oakland A’s at Oakland Coliseum. May did not disappoint, striking out eight and tossing six scoreless innings.
The 23-year-old May brought the heat against Oakland. He threw nine pitches that topped out at 99 mph or higher and averaged 98.4 on his four-seamer.

He only needed 85 pitches over six frames of work to keep the A’s offense at bay. May’s stuff on the mound looked as if he was mid-season form. This is encouraging, especially the fact he had 16 swing and misses as well.
The Dodgers would go on to beat the A’s 10-3.
Last season, May finished in the seventh percentile in whiff % last season. The 6-foot-6 righty is focusing on more swings and misses this season. After last nights performance, he is well on his way.
May posted an impressive 2.57 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP, both were career-best for him across 56 innings. He made a total of 10 starts over the course of the 2020 season.
Fantasy Impact
From a fantasy standpoint, his ability to get swings and misses will increase his fantasy value. If you happened to draft him, he is a perfect must two-start pitcher this week.
With Price in the bullpen and Gonsolin missing time on the injured list with an inflamed shoulder, this is May’s job to lose.
If you had the foresight to draft May or roster him prior to the season, last night he paid dividends for owners. He will continue to offer fantasy upside after last nights dominant start, Price struggling in the bullpen and Gonsolin hurt.
The Dodgers have one of the best lineups in the league featuring Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger. With May having that kind of fire power in the lineup and his ability to make guys swing and miss, he’s a must start.
The former top prospect looks like he’s ready to tap into his potential. He will make his next start against the Nationals at Dodgers Stadium.
