The MLB offseason has been slow with a capital S. The season ended on October 28, 2018 and the two biggest fishes in the sea (Manny Machado and Bryce Harper) have yet to sign anywhere. Even beyond those two you have Craig Kimbrel, Dallas Kuechel, A.J. Pollock, Mike Moustakas, Adam Jones, still available on the market. I’m here to tell you that three of the aforementioned players will be out of the free agent pool soon enough.
The Philadelphia Phillies came into the offseason talking about spending “stupid money”. Who really knows what that was supposed to mean, but signing David Robertson and Andrew McCutchen doesn’t add up to dumb cash.
I believe that the Phillies have been waiting (just like everyone else) for one of the big fishes to land. If they are unable to get either Harper or Machado, it pushes their timeline back. “Win now” mode would then be a few years away instead of the next five years.
Based off of what reporter Bob Nightengale is saying, Philadelphia will be getting at least one of the two. To me that means that once Philly acquires one of the mega-stars they will then go after starting pitcher Dallas Kuechel and closer Craig Kimbrel to make them contenders for now the near future. Get ready for some spending.
