Could the Dallas Cowboys re-create the “Legion of Boom” under new DC Dan Quinn?

The last time the Dallas Cowboys had interest in a future Hall-of-Fame cornerback, Deion Sanders landed in Big D. At the time, Sanders was one of the leagues best cornerbacks and was coming off a Super Bowl win with the 49ers. This time around, the Cowboys have interested in a former 49ers defensive player but he’s not at the level of Sanders anymore.

When free agency begins the Cowboys are expected to pursue Richard Sherman. During his time in San Francisco, Sherman reestablished himself as an All-Pro, a Pro Bowl defender and he was part of the 2019 49ers team that lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Sherman is not as young as Sanders when he signed with Dallas, in fact he is five years older. When “Primetime” signed with the Cowboys, he was 28 and in the prime of his career. Sherman, 33, is on the back nine of his career but still is playing at a high level.

Legion of Boom in Dallas?

Richard Sherman as a member of the Seattle Seahawks’ Legion of Boom.

Before Sherman makes his final home in Canton, he wants to play a few more seasons in the NFL. Sherman makes a ton of sense for the Cowboys. This offseason the Cowboys hired former Falcons head coach and Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. He will serve as the Cowboys defensive coordinator and would love a reunion with Sherman.

The Cowboys have Trevon Diggs and Anthony Brown who are under contract. Both Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis are up for a new contract which means Dallas is in the market for upgrades.

When Sherman and Quinn were together in Seattle they were part of the “Legion of Boom”. Quinn’s defense was the NFL’s top-ranked defense in 2013 and 2014. The 33-year-old Sherman isn’t the only upgrade the Cowboys will need in their secondary. Safety Donovan Woods is also a free agent and if they want to recreate the “Legion of Boom”, they’ll need playmakers for Quinn.

Malcolm Butler a fit for Dallas?

If the Cowboys aren’t able to land Sherman, they could turn their attention to former Patriots and Titans defensive back Malcolm Butler who was released. Both veterans would bring a winning attitude and leadership to the Cowboys.

Bleacher Report is predicting Butler to sign in Dallas. Either Butler or Sherman would be a welcome addition to a defense that ranked No. 27 in Pro Football Focus’ coverage grades in 2020.

Dallas has already re-signed Dak Prescott to a long-term deal and he’ll lead an impressive offense. The Cowboys now need some veteran leaders on defense. Quinn would bring out Sherman’s potential in Dallas. Butler would fit the motto “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” for Butler. In case you for got…
