Could Jonathan Lucroy Make This Red Sox Team?

The Red Sox have quite the battle on their hands in Spring Training. Obviously, Christian Vazquez is going to be the starting catcher. But, there seems to be some fierce competition for the backup spot. One name that comes to mind is former National League All-star Jonathan Lucroy. The man has been turning heads since signing on with the Red Sox.

There’s a few reasons to believe the Lucroy could be a part of the Red Sox once the season actually starts.

He’s a Former All-star

Like I’ve mentioned before, Lucroy was an All-star twice in the National League. Now I know what you’re thinking, “that’s in the past”. You’re right, it was in the past. But if even a glimmer of that past swing from Lucroy appears for the Red Sox, they have themselves a pretty good backup catcher. Vazquez will need days off here and there. There also could be the case where certain pitchers like to pitch to Lucroy. It’s all there for the catcher to make a difference within this Red Sox team.

Ron Roenicke is a BIG Lucroy Guy

Ron Roenicke loves Lucroy. He’s also noticed that his swing is coming back into form. Like the tweet says, LuCroy can even play some first base if needed. When you’re getting praise from the manager and former Red Sox catching legends Jason Varitek, you’re doing something right. Roenicke is loving what he’s seeing from Lucroy. After all, he’s seen a lot of the catcher in the past when they were both with the Brewers. I can see why the Red Sox manager might have a soft spot for Lucroy.

What Other Choice Do You Have?

Let’s be real here for a second. Would you rather have a healthy Jonathan Lucroy or Kevin Plawecki? Personally, I’m taking Lucroy. He’s coming in on a cheap deal. The man wants to prove he can still make an impact at the Major League level. What else is there to say here? It’s really not much of a hard choice when you break it all down, is it?

In Conclusion

I like Jonathan Lucroy. The guy is a low risk, high reward type of signing. If he continues to open eyes, maybe there is still something there. The Red Sox have had a lot of negative things go their way this off-season. Why not go into the season with something positive to look forward to for once? Jonathan Lucroy can be that bit of positivity that we need for this 2020 season. After all, what else can we really hang our hat on? Please make 2020 a little bit more bearable Jonathan Lucroy, I beg you!
