Cormier Two Division Champ, Brock Lesnar Returns
The UFC now has another fighter they can call champ champ, as Daniel Cormier made history Saturday night. Cormier knocked out now former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in round 1. Cormier says he can now be considered one of the greatest of all time. The only other man to hold two titles at once was Conor Mcgregor. Mcgregor beat Jose Aldo to win the featherweight title, then went on to defeat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight championship. Cormier’s win is arguably more impressive. The reason it could be considered more impressive is because Cormier is almost 40 years old, and he beat the most successful heavyweights in UFC history.
What happened after the fight is what got a lot of fans talking. Brock Lesnar is officially back and he came into the octagon after the fight. Lesnar pushed Cormier and almost cause a brawl inside the octagon. The last time fans have seen Lesnar in a UFC octagon was all the way back at UFC 200 where he beat Mark Hunt. His victory wasn’t without controversy because a drug test after the fight came back positive. This caused Lesnar to be suspended. Cormier vs Lesnar would be a giant fight, and would definitely be a huge pay day for Daniel Cormier. Cormier also mentioned on an interview with Ariel Helwani that he wants to defend his light heavyweight championship one more time. The name he said he’d like to defend it against is UFC veteran Shogun Rua. Cormier said he doesn’t think Jones will be back from suspension in time for them to have a third fight.
It’ll be interesting to see how Cormier fairs against a much larger man in Brock Lesnar. It’ll also be very interesting to see if Cormier can retire as both the UFC’s light heavyweight champion and heavyweight champion. If Cormier is able to retire still the champion in two divisions, Cormier could have the chance to go down as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
