New England College Football Preview: UConn Huskies

The UConn Huskies.  The ultimate on the outside looking in team.  Members of the American Athletic Conference which dubs themselves as part of the “Power 6”.  The AAC or “The American” does however have the “National Champion” UCF Knights if that makes you feel better?

2017 Season

This was a season to forget for UConn.  They went 3-9 and had some embarrassing performances.  Their first game of the season was a near loss to FCS Holy Cross.  After squeaking out a 27-20 win vs. the Crusaders, UConn went on to lose its next four games (with one being cancelled).  Being 1-4 heading into a game against Temple on the road, UConn needed to win if they wanted any chance of having a successful year.  After barely getting by Temple 28-24, they followed that up with another close win vs. Tulsa 20-14.  And that was pretty much the highlight of their season.

The rest of the games, were, well, sad.  They didn’t have one close game until their last game where they lost to Cincinatti 22-21.  They got blown out by Missouri 52-12, USF 37-20, UCF 49-24, and BC 39-16.  Randy Edsall returned to UConn to an absolutely abysmal situation.  However; even though UConn has finished 3-9 in two straight seasons, they have ‘improved’ a little bit.  After bringing in Rhett Lashlee (who since left UConn) the offense wasn’t quite as embarrassing.

Losing Ways to Continue for UConn?

Expect another three win season for the Huskies.  They start the season with UCF and that will probably be over before it starts.  Winnable games for the Huskies this year are most likely URI, Tulsa, and MAYBE Temple.  This team is beginning to be like a cupcake team.  They signed a one year deal with Missouri, that’s it, one year.  To go down to Missouri and get mopped up by them but they did receive a cool payday of $1 million.

They have an extremely young team again and Randy Edsall will have to figure out who goes where.  The one bright side for UConn is they might have an extremely good defense in the years to come.  They have good talent at the LB and DB position but it probably won’t be enough if they want to get close to the .500 mark.  It’s too bad since UConn decided to bring back football in 2000, they haven’t seen much success since the early days.  They’re starting to become the team that accepts a big paycheck just to get destroyed.  They have another one year deal agreed with Clemson for the 2021 season where UConn will make over $1.2 million.

At least their basketball teams are good right?
