Alright, now that it’s December we’re officially in the Christmas season for those who celebrate, and as a result we’re all in the midst of hearing Christmas songs essentially 24/7. This gave me the idea: what classic Christmas songs are really hitting this year? Let’s have some fun and rank the top songs this Christmas season.
10: (There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays by Perry Como
Perry Como’s holiday hit is stumbling out of the gates a bit this year, primarily because people are simply sick of being home. Unfortunately, many will still be, thanks to rises in COVID at this time. The song does mention some travel, so there’s still hope it can recover by the time Christmas is actually here.
9: (Everybody’s Waiting for) The Man with the Bag by Kay Starr
I’m gonna be honest here, I don’t think this song has ever registered with me in the Christmasses of the past. This year, however, I’ve heard this song a TON. It’s not bad, but I think the amount of times I’ve heard it this year is really what’s carrying its ranking. This song probably has the greatest chance of dropping off the top 10 by the end of the season.
8: Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer by Gene Autry
What’s a Christmas songs power ranking without Rudolph? I can’t imagine a Christmas without claymation movies, and no claymation means no Rudolph. Easily top 10.
7: Frosty the Snowman by the Ronettes
Frosty is already a classic, but the version by the Ronettes is especially good. Some of the more “traditional” versions get old to me by the end of the Christmas season, but the Ronettes add a fresh musicality to it that cannot be ignored. And again, what’s Christmas without Frosty?
6: White Christmas by Bing Crosby
A nice, chill Christmas song that just makes you feel warm inside. It dropped a few spots this year due to a lack of snow so far this season (thanks climate change), but it still sits solidly at #6 in these rankings. I honestly fully expect it to overtake #5 later on this season. Too experienced not to do so.
5: Last Christmas by Wham!
Surprisingly not talked about a lot this year, but it’s definitely solidified itself as a top song purely by precious years’ performance. This is one of my mom’s artists too, so this gives it a few extra points.
4: Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms
Jingle Bell Rock has been solidified as a top Christmas song since it was released in 1957, and that’s not changing this year. What more can I say?
3: Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town by the Jackson 5
Truly a bop. A consistent performer year in and year out. Who doesn’t love the Jackson 5? And I have to say this is one of the few Christmas songs that never gets old. Could sneak into the top spot depending on your music tastes.
2: “Linus and Lucy” by Vince Guaraldi
The one main reason holding this song out from the top spot is that most people only know it as “The Peanuts Christmas Song.” Still, you can’t be unhappy when this song is playing. It perfectly encapsulates the Christmas spirit, the joy that comes with the season.
1: The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole
The undisputed GOAT of Christmas songs. A staple of a night in. Sit by a fire with a Christmas tree in the background, and that’s quintessential Christmas vibes. There should be no debate.
Quick shout out to honorable mentions Feliz Navidad and Wonderful Christmastime. Great songs that will be looking to crack the top 10 later this season or even next.
