Chicago White Sox Fire Manager Rick Renteria After Four Seasons

The MLB playoffs continue with four teams remaining. The Tampa Bay Rays find themselves up 1-0 in the ALCS against the Houston Astros (yay!). The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves open up their series tonight for the NLCS. Meanwhile, other teams are in offseason mode and are trying to get ready for 2021. Well, one team that made a big move this morning was the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox announced today that Rick Renteria will not be returning as manager in 2021.

The Overall Record

Overall, Rick Renteria simply didn’t impress during his four year tenure with the White Sox. He found himself with a .436 winning percentage which simply doesn’t count it in the MLB. It was especially tough during the first three years of the tenure when he went a combined 201-284 before the 2020 season. There was some success in 2020, but remember, it was with a 60 game sample size.

You Have to Wonder…

So the White Sox lost in the Wild Card best of three round to the Oakland Athletics. But the question that everybody has to ask is this: what happened if the White Sox made a run? Let’s say the White Sox make it to the ALCS. Does Renteria stick around for at least one more season? Maybe not. But it is an entertaining question to talk about. Maybe the decision was going to happen no matter how far the White Sox advanced in the playoffs. But that’s in hindsight now.

The White Sox Future

The White Sox future is extremely bright when you think about it. They have a legitimate ace in Lucas Giolito. The Indians are starting to slip in the A.L. Central and the Twins can never advance in the playoffs. They have young stars in Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez, and Jose Abreu just to start. Their pitching significantly got better. This team is going to be fun to watch for years to come.

In Conclusion

Rick Renteria just ran out of time. I will say this though. Whoever inherits this team next will be in a great position. This team is young with a good mix of veterans in there too. Assuming the Red Sox still struggle next year, the White Sox will be a fun team to root for for years to come.
