Bryse Wilson is making a good first impression in Pittsburgh

Less than two weeks ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired Bryse Wilson from the Braves for Richard Rodriguez. The trade came at the eve of the deadline as the Pirates continued to add young plyers with upside. The Pirates received a promising pitcher, in Wilson, who has struggled in the majors. While the North Carolina native has only made two starts with his new team, he has flashed his potential.

In 11 innings of work, he posted a 3.27 ERA. The twenty-three-year-old has struck out seven batters and allowed four runs. Although the Pirates pitching surrendered 21 runs in their four games series with the Reds, Wilson was the only starter to record a quality start. As the Pirates’ focus has shifted to 2021, Wilson will be a player to watch.

Additionally, the former fourth-round pick has not allowed a home run with Pittsburgh. In five starts with the Braves this year, Wilson had allowed seven. He has also shown better control as he’s only walked three batters. On a staff that has been plagued by control issues this year, Wilson is proving to be an exception. That trend will be critical as he looks to secure a spot in the rotation next year.

What to expect from Wilson for the remainder of 2021

Through his first three major league seasons, Wilson has posted a 4.43 ERA. He also has one postseason appearance, in which he held the Dodgers to one run in six innings of work. In Atlanta, he struggled with pitching out of jams but has avoided that in Pittsburgh. His performance has been one of the few bright spots for the Pirates of late.

As the season winds down, Wilson will be looking to continue his recent play. He was once a top ten  prospect with the Braves and has shown why since arriving in Pittsburgh. On a Pirates team full of players trying to prove themselves, Wilson has stood out.
