Bruins Rookie Jack Ahcan is making his case

Bruins’ rookie defenseman Jack Ahcan scored his first NHL goal Thursday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. The undrafted rookie out of St. Cloud State has found his way onto the Bruins roster and is making the most of it. With Matt Grzelcyk out, Ahcan has found himself on the Bruins’ second pairing with fellow defenseman Brandon Carlo. Could he find himself in a role with the big club going forward?

Ahcan’s tenure with the Bruins

Minnesota native Ahcan spent all four years at St. Cloud State, winning various accolades and serving as the team captain his senior year. Ahcan remained undrafted leaving college and signed with the Bruins in March of 2020 following his senior year. Last season, Ahcan jumped around between the ECHL, AHL and was even rewarded a few games with the Bruins. This season he has played with the Providence Bruins in 34 games while accumulating 21 points.

Do the Bruins have a spot for Ahcan this season?

The Bruins depth with left defensemen has been quite a log jam. However, with Matt Grzelcyk out along with Jakub Zboril and rookie defensemen Urho Vaakanainen, Ahcan has been called upon to fill in. When Grzelcyk and Vaakananien return, Ahcan may find himself back in Providence. Not a knock on him, rather just the odd man out on a loaded backend left side. The rookie has impressed with his play though and will likely be the first player called upon going forward. He also gives Bruins General Manager more options when it comes to considering the future of the Bruins backend.
