Bruins name Jim Montgomery Head Coach
The Bruins officially announced Friday that Jim Montgomery is the 29th head coach in franchise history. For Bruins fans, this is quite a relief as it has been a rather gloomy few weeks. For Montgomery, this will be his third stint behind an NHL bench. He spent two years as an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues and was formerly the head coach of the Dallas Stars for two years.
Montgomery and what he brings to the Bruins
Jim Montgomery as a coach has been a winner at every level prior to his young NHL coaching career. He is coming off a season where he helped the St. Louis Blues to a top ranked power play. As well as a strong playoff run that was halted by the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche. Deemed a player coach by some which has been reaffirmed by Blues forward David Perron’s comments this week. As well as a reported former Bruin who also echoed these sentiments.
Montgomery’s past and future
Montgomery broke into the NHL scene as the head coach of the Dallas Stars. During the 2019-2020 season with the Stars, he was relieved of his coaching duties in the middle of the season despite a respectable record. Later his struggles with alcohol and eventual stint in rehab were brought to light. Since then, Montgomery has worked his way back and now has a second chance as head coach of the Bruins. He will have his work cut out for him with the Bruins missing key pieces for the first half of next season.
