Bruins’ Charlie McAvoy has Procedure for Abnormal Heart Rhythm

Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy missed practice on Monday for what head coach Bruce Cassidy said was a doctors appointment. Just a few hours later, the team internist, Dr. David Finn announced the defenseman underwent a successful procedure to correct an abnormal heart rhythm.

McAvoy will be monitored overnight at Mass General in Boston and is expected to miss at least two weeks.

According to Finn, McAvoy complained of heart palpitations during the Nov. 26 game against the Edmonton Oilers. After an evaluation, it was determined he had supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).

Finn said the type of SVT McAvoy has is not dangerous to his health – however it can recur at any time and cause significant symptoms. He has been monitored by the team since November through their most recent game on Saturday, but opted to have the procedure due to the high risk of recurrence.

McAvoy has been a force on the ice for the Bruins this season – collecting 25 points through 45 games and a plus/minus rating of 18.

Boston plays five games over the next two weeks – including a crucial game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are just five points behind the B’s for second place in the Atlantic Division.
