Breaking Down The Patriots Most Surprising Roster Moves

If you’re an NFL player, making the New England Patriots is quite the accomplishment. You’re on the team of the 2000’s, that have won six Super Bowl titles. You get to play with arguably the best quarterback and head coach in NFL history. The most important part is that you always have a chance to win week in and week out. The only thing that is tough is when you get cut from the Patriots. There was a lot of shocking moves made toward the Patriots 53 man roster. Let’s take a look at the most surprising roster moves that the Patriots made toward their final 53 man roster.

Demariyus Thomas Getting Cut…And Re-Signed

This was the weirdest move the Patriots made all day. The Patriots had cut veteran wide receiver Demariyus Thomas on Saturday, with intentions of bringing him back. Thomas had 2 touchdown receptions in the final preseason game against the Giants. Thomas being cut was strange. But have no fear, Patriots fans. Demariyus Thomas re-signed today!

The NFL is like the Wild West. You never know what is going to happen! Thomas will be getting ready for the Patriots Sunday night opening game at Gillette against the Steelers. Why was he cut? It was to put rookie receiver N’Keal Harry on short-term IR. This makes the spot open for Thomas, while still keeping Harry for later on this season. This wide receiving core is going to be SCARY good!

Patriots Cutting And Later Retaining Gunner Olszewski

Look at the time difference on those two tweets. Around noon, Patriots WR/ST/DB Gunner Olszewski was told he would be released. A lot of Patriots fans loved this guy as he was fast, shifty, and entertaining to watch. Then at 4:00 pm EST, he’s told he will actually be retained on the initial 53 man roster. Olszewski did look good throughout the preseason. There is usually an underdog story in a lot of NFL training camps. Olszewski was one of the main stories in Patriots training camp. To see him make the team is nothing short of a fantastic story.

Patriots Releasing Brian Hoyer

This was a move that a lot of people saw coming. Hoyer didn’t appear in the final two preseason games. Plus, Jarrett Stidham has looked very good in his limited time playing in the preseason. Personally, I’m okay with the move. It opens the door for somebody young to learn under Brady and be ready to lead when the opportunity calls. But fear not everyone, Brian Hoyer has a new team.

This move makes too much sense. With Andrew Luck retiring unexpectedly, the Colts needed a backup for Jacoby Brissett. So, why not bring another former Patriots quarterback into the fold? Hoyer is getting 12 million over 3 years, 9 of it guaranteed. Hopefully, Hoyer gets some more playing time in Indy than he did in New England. But, the Brian Hoyer era in New England is officially over.

In Conclusion

It’s always crazy to see what the Patriots do when cutting down their roster. At this point, we all have to believe in what Bill Belichick decides. The roster is set to begin the season. We’re on to Pittsburgh, six days away!
