Bills Look To Rebound Against Kansas City

After losing 42-16 in Tennessee on Tuesday night, the Buffalo Bills will have to forget about that horrific game and move on because the defending Super Bowl champions are heading into Buffalo this upcoming Monday. Just like the Bills, the Chiefs got handed their first loss of the season courtesy of the Las Vegas Raiders, just not as bad as the Bills. There is no question that Kansas City is the favorite to win this game but here are some things to keep in mind.

Struggles on defense

Going into the season, everyone thought the Bills defense would be a Super Bowl defense and for good reason. Despite losing a couple of starters in free agency, Buffalo still had great defenders on the team. However, the last few weeks have been a struggle for the defense. Against the Titans, Buffalo’s passing and rushing defense did not do well. Starting with passing, Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill went 21/28, throwing for 195 yards and three touchdowns. The rushing defense didn’t do much better. They gave up 139 yards and allowed three touchdowns.

If Buffalo wants to pull off the upset, the defense needs to step it up big time. Especially with going up against the best quarterback in the NFL, in my opinion. Patrick Mahomes is a pain to play against and will be for the rest of his career. Another big reason why the defense is struggling in my eyes is because they’re missing tackles. It was very evident in the Titans game, Bills defenders were not tackling guys and allowed to them to get more yards.

Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds needs to play better too. As one of the key pieces on the defense, Edmunds has been dealing with an injury and it’s affecting his performance when he’s on the field. With him having a shoulder injury, it does make sense that he would not be the same player. Hopefully his injury starts to get better as the season goes along.

Getting healthy

This is what you want to see if you’re a Bills fan. Starting off with wide receiver John Brown, his injury definitely hurt the Bills last week. It showed in the first half too. Wide receiver Cole Beasley was not targeted until the second half. Rookie wide receiver Gabriel Davis has a bright future in this league but really didn’t stand out. Stefon Diggs was the one who was getting the workload for the receiving core because of the injury to Brown. With Brown being a full participant in practice, this is great news for the Bills.

Even though cornerback Tre’Davious White has not been great so far this season, Buffalo definitely missed him last week. Josh Norman filled in for White and it did not go well for him. Even though White was limited, it’s better than him not practicing at all which was the result last week before the Titans game. Linebacker Matt Milano was also limited in practice and if he can play on Monday, that would be a huge help for the Bills defense.

Lastly, the offensive line hopes to get one of their starters back on Monday. Guard Quinton Spain had a full practice after missing last week’s game with a foot injury. According to Bills sideline reporter Sal Capaccio, guard Jon Feliciano was practicing today as well but has no timetable for a return said head coach Sean McDermott.

Josh Allen

Last week was the first time Josh Allen did not look like an MVP quarterback. Allen went 29/46, throwing for 275 yards, recording two touchdowns but throwing two interceptions. The first interception wasn’t his fault but the second one was really bad. He wasn’t awful, but not having Brown did not help him. As I mentioned earlier, Beasley was not targeted once until the second half. Allen tried to get Diggs involved as much as he could which is fine. However, he would throw to Diggs when the Bills new wide receiver would be defended well by Tennessee.

If all goes well in practice this week, getting Brown back would be huge for Josh. In other articles, I mentioned how Diggs really opens opportunities for Brown and Beasley. It’s not that Allen played bad, his stats just looked a little different in the game against the Titans.

Mental Errors

Buffalo was a different team last week. Head coach Sean McDermott preaches disciplined football and the Bills did not have that against the Titans. Buffalo took ten penalties in the game and that is not disciplined football. They cannot do that against Kansas City or they will pay for it. Dropped passes also didn’t help Buffalo. The Titans defense did a great job but the Bills killed their chances when the receivers were not doing their job. Those are momentum killers and even though the team really didn’t have any momentum, dropped passes will kill you mentally. Buffalo will need to improve on both of these issues if they want to win this game.

Stopping Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense

This is an obvious one but I still need to bring this up. Mahomes is having a great start to the season. So far, he has thrown 13 touchdowns and one interception, registering 1,474 yards according to Pro Football Reference. Like I previously mentioned, the Bills defense has not been good. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier needs to come up with a different strategy because the current plan is not working. I get it, Buffalo is 4-1 but it seems like the offense is the reason why they’re off to a good start so far this season, which is different because the last couple of seasons, it’s been the defense that has been really good. It’s a complete reversal this season so far.

When you have the best quarterback in the NFL up next, there’s no better time to get the defense straightened out than this game. As everyone knows, Mahomes is fantastic. After losing to the Raiders last week, I expect him to be ready to go against Buffalo which concerns me. Hopefully the defense gets better, they need to on Monday. Can’t forget about wide receiver Tyreek Hill, rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and tight end Travis Kelce.
