Autozone Liberty Bowl Preview
We have two pass heavy offenses going at it in this bowl matchup. A Big 12 vs SEC matchup should be an interesting one to watch in the middle of a week. We got a matchup between Mississippi State (7-5) and Texas Tech (6-6). This matchup could be an interesting one for sure. With that being said here is my preview for the Autozone Liberty Bowl.
Mississippi State
Mike Leach had a better year this year in the SEC with the Bulldogs. This offense averages 385.7 passing yards per game which is the 6th best in the nation. They also average 464.5 total yards per game as well. This offense is led by quarterback Will Rogers. Rogers has thrown for 4,449 passing yards (2nd in the nation) to go along with a 35/8 touchdown to interception ratio. Rogers’ number one target is Makai Polk. Polk has 98 receptions to go along with 989 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. This passing attack will keep a defense like Texas Tech on their toes the entire game.
Defensively, this team is ranked 65th in the nation in total yards allowed per game (346.8). This defense also just gives up a little over 25 points per game. Mississippi State’s defense isn’t the best, but it isn’t the worst. They could be an interesting one to see against Texas Tech’s inconsistency on offense.
Texas Tech
The Red Raiders offense is a up tempo offense and they love throwing the football. They average 257.7 passing yards per game (65th in the nation). Total yards wise, this offense averages 425 total yards per game as well. Texas Tech has gone through plenty of quarterbacks this season as they have a total of three starters this year. It looks like Donovan Smith is in line for the start in the bowl game, but how effective will he be? Smith in his last start had 262 passing yards and two touchdowns, but they lost in that one. He has potential to be a good quarterback, but I think the pressure will get to him in this one. Texas Tech will be without their number one receiver as he prepares for the NFL Draft. This offense will try and flourish without him.
Defensively, this team is not good at all. They allow 419.7 total yards per game and give up 32.1 points per game. Could they stop this Mississippi State passing attack? Yes they for sure could, however I see them struggling mightily in this bowl matchup.
Prediction:
Mississippi State is a 9.5 point favorite with the over/under set at 58.5. I lean the over here, but I am worried about Texas Tech not holding up their end of the bargain offensively. So my official play is none other than Mississippi State -9.5. I don’t like the Red Raiders not even a little bit, but they could prove me wrong. I think Mississippi State routes Texas Tech in this matchup and you should trust me on this one.
