Now that it’s January and the Patriots season has ended a whole month earlier than we’re used to, it’s time to start looking ahead. Here in Boston, we’re spoiled with teams that consistently at least go to the playoffs. This consistency is not something I expect to stop any time soon. With that being said, here are my 2020 Boston Sports Predictions.
I think it is safe to say that the Celtics have recovered from last season. In fact, they are having the kind of season all of the experts thought they would have with Kyrie Irving last year. Currently, the Celtics have a record of 28-8 and are in second place in the Eastern Conference. It’s pretty much a given at this point that they are going to make the playoffs. I know that there is still a lot of games to play but they have proved that this is a team that is built to last. Even with injuries to Gordon Hayward and Marcus Smart, they still found a way to win. If they can continue to win without some of their key players, there’s no doubt they’re in it for the long hall.
My Celtics prediction for 2020 is they lose to the Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals. As good as they look this year, I don’t believe they have an answer for Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, if anyone is going to beat the reigning MVP this year, it will most likely be the Celtics.
The last month or so has not been kind to the Boston Bruins. Despite still leading the Atlantic Division with a 24-8-11 record, they’re slipping quickly. Since December 1st, they have gone 6-5-6. It hasn’t been pretty, especially in overtime. In the last few weeks they’ve gone to over time 6 times and have lost every one of them. After such a hot start, everyone knew that they’d fizzle out at some point. However, I don’t think anyone expected it to get this bad. They need to start improving soon or they’re going to start losing ground in the standings. Bruce Cassidy needs to get a hold on this team and fast. I would not be surprised if you see the Bruins active as the trade deadline approaches.
My Bruins prediction for 2020 is another Stanley Cup run. At this point, I’m not sure they will win it but I think they at least get close again. Their Cup window is closing quickly for their veterans like Chara and Bergeron. If they want another championship before they hang up their skates, it’s going to have to happen soon.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox’ last season was underwhelming to say the least. After winning the World Series the year before, not making the playoffs was a big bust. Unfortunately, there’s not much proof that anything will change in their upcoming season. Desperate to cut payroll, the Red Sox are more likely to get rid of talent than acquire it this year. Even if Mookie Betts stays for the next season there’s no real telling if the Sox can go far. Especially if he’s mentally checked out. They also still have no closer. If last year proved anything it was that they desperately needed one.
My Red Sox prediction for 2020 is they get eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. I do think they will make some improvements from last year but I don’t have confidence that they will be too significant. If they lose Mookie Betts, whether it’s by a trade or free agency next year, they have to start a rebuild.
New England Patriots
The Patriots are the biggest question mark going into this next year. With Tom Brady’s status with the team a complete mystery, there’s really no telling what will happen. If they lose him, they’re most likely going to have to rebuild for the first time in forever. If they have to rebuild, will Bill Belichick even want to have to deal with that or will he move on too? This very may well be the end of an era. However, at this point in time, it’s too soon to tell. There’s still plenty of what ifs up in the air. It’s also important to remember that Tom Brady isn’t the only big name on the Patriots that is entering free agency this year. Among some of the most notable names we have Devin McCourty, Kyle Van Noy, Matthew Slater and Ben Watson. This could look like a different team next year.
My Patriots prediction for 2020 is one last Super Bowl for Brady. Look, I know it doesn’t look good right now. However, I really don’t see Brady’s final play as a Patriot will be a pick six. I truly believe he will be back for at least one more year and win one more Super Bowl. That really would be one more revenge tour for him before he rides off in the sunset.
