Pick a Side: Rajon Rondo or Isaiah Thomas?

Last night, Rajon Rondo and Isaiah Thomas were both ejected after the two got into an in-game confrontation. Following the game, IT told reporters that their argument stemmed from a couple weeks back when Rondo made comments in regards to Thomas not deserving a tribute video from the Celtics. According to IT, Rondo continued to bring that up during the game, ultimately leading to the two going at one another.

As a Celtics fan, I feel obligated to pick a side in this argument. I can understand both sides pertaining to why people think that IT may or may not have deserved a video. But for the sake of this argument, I’m taking Rondo’s side.

I’ve stated many, many times on this blog how appreciative I am of Isaiah Thomas and what he did during his time in Boston, but what Rondo had to say really isn’t that far off. This is Boston, a city of champions. We don’t hang conference title banners here, we hang championship banners. What Rondo was able to accomplish during his time in Boston is far superior to what IT did strictly because he helped bring home a title. What Isaiah accomplished was an indivdual goal, not a team goal. I don’t give a shit about individual goals. Sure, they’re cool, but winning a championship is priority number one. Individually, Isaiah had one of the best seasons in Celtics history and absolutely deserves recognition for it. He also played under circumstances in which I didn’t think anyone could ever play under. But in the grand scheme of things, he only had one elite season and wasn’t even here half as long as Rondo was. He also took multiple jabs at the organization after he was traded, unlike Rondo, who has been pretty graceful since Danny Ainge decided to move on from him. I think people just get too caught up in the moment with Isaiah and act like Rondo wasn’t one of the most transformative players in this franchises history.

In general, I feel like a lot of Celtics fans didn’t appreciate Rondo. A lot of them booed the guy on his way out of town for no good reason. When Pierce, KG, and Ray Allen were on their last legs in 2012, Rondo carried them to game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals, a series in which they led a stacked Miami Heat team 3-2. And if it wasn’t for a blown foul call in game two and a LeBron eruption in game six, the Celtics win that series and probably go on to win the Finals against OKC. Isaiah’s time here will never live up to Rondo’s, but people seem to appreciate him more. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
