Caleb Williams has officially entered the transfer portal. The former Oklahoma quarterback is leaving Oklahoma after his freshman season. Williams will be looking to take his highly regarded talents elsewhere for the 2022 season. He threw for 1,916 passing yards to go along with 21 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Caleb Williams also rushed for 442 rushing yards and added six rushing touchdowns to his total as well. There are two teams that I realistically see him going to, one dark horse, and three other teams that have outside shots at getting Williams to transfer to their program. With that being said here is my thoughts on where Caleb Williams will transfer to.
USC
This looks like the most realistic landing spot for Williams. Reuniting with the head coach that recruited you to play for him just makes so much sense. Williams would be the best quarterback USC has had since Sam Darnold. Obviously, one thing to hold Williams back is the lack of next level talent that has come from USC in the past decade or so. They haven’t had a solid NFL quarterback come out of USC since Carson Palmer. However, in today’s NFL there are three starting quarterbacks that came from Lincoln Riley’s college coaching.
Those three starting quarterbacks are Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts. The Trojans look like they can be a threat in college football again with Riley, but he needs a quarterback. Williams would be the perfect fit because he already knows Riley’s system. The only other option for USC at quarterback at the moment is Jaxson Dart. If you don’t think Lincoln Riley isn’t going to try and pull out all the stops to get his former quarterback to join him at USC for two seasons you need to get re-evaluated on everything that you know about college football.
Georgia
Georgia will be competing for a National title in less than a week. However, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t looking for a new quarterback in 2022. Their starter Stetson Bennett will be graduating and he will leave the program more than likely. Plus the other quarterback option on the roster is J.T. Daniels and he hasn’t stayed healthy long enough in his college football career to be that guy. Caleb Williams would be a huge add to this team and would put them right back in the conversation to win the national title next season.
The Bulldogs have basically all of their offensive weapons coming back next season and to replace Stetson Bennett with a quarterback like Caleb Williams is a huge upgrade. With Caleb Williams at the starting quarterback position, the sky is the limit for this Georgia offense. Also something intriguing to watch out for is that there is a matchup in September that would be Caleb Williams vs Spencer Rattler which would be must watch around the country. Georgia will be poised to be a favorite to win the national title next year if they can convince Caleb Williams to head on down to Athens.
UNC
This is my dark horse candidate, but it makes sense to why this could happen. Playing for a legendary coach like Mack Brown has its perks. North Carolina is losing their starting quarterback to the NFL Draft in Sam Howell. So they will look for a replacement for him and Caleb Williams would be an excellent replacement for Mack Brown. The only thing that would seriously hold Williams back from going there is the amount of turn over that will be taking place. However, the thought of Caleb Williams playing for Mack Brown has the potential to break school records. They are a dark horse for a reason, but don’t be surprised if this is where Caleb Williams ends up.
Final Thought:
I think USC is the clear cut favorite as I believe there is an 80 percent chance that he goes to Southern California to reunite with Lincoln Riley. There is a five percent chance that he goes to Georgia and a five percent chance that he ends up in North Carolina. There are three other teams that should be in the running or very much so interested in Caleb Williams. Those three teams are Penn State, Ole Miss and LSU. All need quarterbacks and could very much so compete for their conference title with a quarterback like Caleb Williams on their roster. Where will Caleb Williams go? We are going to have to wait and find out.
