The Case For Jalen Hurts As The Patriots Next Quarterback

If you haven’t heard, which I highly doubt, Tom Brady is no longer the starting quarterback of the New England Patriots. After a 20-year run that included six Super Bowl championships, the three-time NFL MVP has decided to pack his things and head to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington).

So where does this leave the Patriots? Many have thrown out the idea of snatching up a veteran quarterback, but as the offseason has continued very few of those guys remain.

Today, the Chicago Bears traded for Nick Foles. Yesterday, the Carolina Panthers signed Teddy Bridgewater and the Indianapolis Colts signed Phillip Rivers, leaving Jameis Winston on the free-agent market, and Andy Dalton and Cam Newton as possible trade targets. The quarterback game of musical chairs is fully underway and the Patriots seem to be a bystander.

Now, that it isn’t to say the Pats don’t grab one of the three guys mentioned, but I can’t see it. They are already strung on cap space and Bill Belichick has made it clear through the years with how he managed Brady’s contract that he isn’t too keen on forking over dough to a signal caller.

Besides, how much more upside does Newton or Dalton than backup Jarret Stidham? You could say Newton is better, but his health has become such a question mark it might not be worth it. Especially when he will most likely command a contract close to if not more than $20 million a year.

Then you have Winston who has all the talent in the world, but consistently turns the ball over. I don’t see a world where Belichick gives the keys to his offense to a guy that threw 30 interceptions last year: and don’t give me that LASIK eye surgery bologna.

The likelihood that the Pats roll into next with Stidham under center game one keeps getting bigger and bigger. But, I have a name to throw out there: Jalen Hurts.

Jalen Hurts to the Pats?

The last time that Belichick and New England spent a premium pick on quarterback was back in 2016 when they took Jacoby Brissett in the third-round. Hurts isn’t an exact comparison to Brissett, but both were lauded for their competitiveness and leadership at school. Both quarterbacks also possess big arms and strong lower bodies that help shake off tacklers.

Hurts is shorter than Brissett, but he is also much faster (4.59 40-yard dash versus Brissett’s 4.95). And like I said, both have the ability to extend plays. But Hurts’ capability is enough to the point where he has been compared to the aforementioned Cam Newton.

After having quarterback in Brady over the past two decades, Belichick may be chomping at the bit to grab an athletic guy like Hurts. Does the most accomplished coach of all-time want to prove he can win with any type of QB? Possibly.

Add in the fact that one of Belichick’s better friends, Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban, has sung the praises of his former quarterback, “Darth Hoodie” could be intrigued by the possibility of having Hurts and Stidham compete for the opportunity to be the Patriots starting quarterback Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season.
