Seattle Mariners are Doing the Right Thing
Blowing it up is always tough to do for a team and its fanbase. But when it’s time it’s time. The Seattle Mariners have realized it is time.
The Mariners have not made the playoffs since 2001. They wasted the prime years of Felix Hernandez. They signed Robinson Cano to a massive contract giving them very little financial flexibility. They have been in MLB purgatory long enough.
After watching the division rival Houston Astros ascend to the top of the MLB by developing their farm system, it seems that the Mariners feel like that is the best way to make it back to the postseason. If that really is the case for the franchise then they should continue to sell players like they already have. Mike Zunino, Mike Leake, Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz, James Paxton, Jean Segura. All gone. Too go along with that 38-year-old Nelson Cruz, who has been a staple in their lineup for four years, is a free agent.
The Mariners are in no position to win right now, and rebuilding by dumping off more players like Mitch Haniger and Dee Gordon for even more prospects will line them up to be successful in the future.
In a way, it’s a similar situation to what the Chicago White Sox had. The dealt Chris Sale, David Robertson, Todd Frazier, Jose Quintana etc., and built up one of the best farm systems in baseball. It shed salary cap, made them a more attractive free-agent destination, and sets them up to make deals for superstars when guys like Eloy Jimenez and Michael Kopech come up and become the core of a winning team. Seattle is doing the right thing, and there are no two ways about it.
