Kevan Miller Nominated for Masterton Trophy

The NHL announced a list of nominations for NHL Awards today. Among the many, Kevan Miller was nominated for the Masterson Trophy.

Per NHL.com, “The trophy is awarded annually by the Professional Hockey Writers Association to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey.”

Kevan Miller has not played an NHL game since April 4, 2019. During the 2018-2019 season, Miller dealt a handful of injuries including a larynx injury. Since then, he’s been battling broken knees and reoccurring breaks.

He has shared a bit of his journey with fans over social media.

It takes a tremendous amount of strength to endure loss after loss and not give up faith, especially when it comes to playing a professional sport.

Although his story might pull at your heartstrings, don’t count on him winning. Other nominees have a bit more going on than “just” coming back from an injury.

Bobby Ryan

Senators’ Bobby Ryan left the NHL in November to enter treatment for substance abuse. On his 100th day of sobriety and his return to Ottowa, he netted a hat trick.

He went on to say that he thought he played his last NHL game in November.

Watching someone hit rock bottom and come back is incredible, but to do it in the way that Ryan did is something hockey fans will never forget.

Oskar Lindblom

The 23 year old Flyer was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma- a rare form of bone cancer, back in December.

Lindblom recently finished treatment. It’s believed that he will play hockey again but just not this season. Even with the pause, it is still too soon for him to return.
