Hi! My name is Jess and I’m a new writer for the Couchguy Sports team. I’m really excited to write and share my sports opinions with you all. In order for you to see where those opinions may come from, you need to get to know me a little better.
Growing up in Massachusetts in the late ’90s and early 2000’s almost guaranteed you were going to be a sports fan. I knew the Red Sox lineup before I knew my ABC’s. Sports were important to my dad and he passed that down to me. I loved the Red Sox and they didn’t love me… Until 2004 that is.
It feels like most Red Sox fans have that one stab to the heart, absolutely heartbreaking moment. After Aaron Boone in 2003, the Nomar trade had eight-year-old Jess in shambles. My dad had bought me a Nomar shersey three days before he was traded. He knew how much I loved Nomar and knew I would appreciate the gesture more than most kids. To this day, I still call the trade my first heartbreak.
Eventually, I got into hockey. I somehow threw myself into the world of hockey writing after never writing about sports before. It spiraled into my blog becoming a place for my sports-related opinions and anything pertaining to sports. I’m so thankful for jumping into this crazy world. It’s opened so many doors for me and I can’t wait to see what I can bring to the table here.
I like using critical thinking. I feel like that’s something that is almost getting lost in journalism. I won’t make all of my pieces some sort of dramatic thing where it’s like I brought out my soapbox. I just want to write and rant about the thing that I love and the thing that breaks my heart.
On a heavier note, I want to talk about something that’s the driving force behind why I joined this team of amazing writers. My dad passed away at the end of January. He was my biggest fan. Every summer he took my brother and I to a new ballpark. It was a tradition like no other and I hope to carry on with my children someday. To lose my best friend and the person who taught me everything I know breaks my heart. Continuing my journey in journalism is how I’ll honor my dad.
I’m really excited to join the team and write all about the Red Sox and Bruins. I can’t wait to interact with you guys and get discussions going!
