Bruins Top Blackhawks in Winter Classic

The Bruins defeated the Blackhawks in the 2019 Winter Classic 4-2.

A tradition like no other the NHL’s Winter Classic, in which an outdoor game is played on New Year’s Day every year. This year it was held at historic Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. The two original six teams matched up in a great afternoon contest.

The Blackhawks jumped to an early lead in the first with a goal from Brandon Perlini, who ripped a puck past Rask from the slot. The Bruins quickly responded when they received a powerplay and David Pastrnak scored his 24th goal of the season.

The stalemate would last until halfway through the second period when Dominik Kahun would tally another goal for the Blackhawks by tipping a shot from the point. A Herculean effort from PAtrice Bergeron would result in another Bruins goal as he tracked down David Kampf on a breakaway and broke up the scoring chance. Right after he found himself alone in the slot and flipped a backhander on net to tie the game.

The Bruins would grab the lead late in the third period as Sean Kuraly would bang a rebound home and give the Bruins his second game-winning goal in a row. Marchand would finish the scoring by adding an empty netter to seal the win. Rask finished the game with 36 saves including a huge stop on a Patrick Kane breakaway.

The Bruins now sit at 2-1 in their Winter Classic appearance, while the Blackhawks are 0-4 in their attempts. The Bruins climbed into third place in the Atlantic and will be back in action Thursday night against thee visiting Calgary Flames.
