When I was about 4, a certain purple dinosaur was my favorite character to watch on a TV screen. When I was about 6, that shifted to a purple dragon in a video game. But over time, his very essence changed, and it just wasn’t the same. I always wanted him to come back as he originally was as I never felt I could outgrow him like I did with the dinosaur. Today, that purple dragon has been resurrected just in time for his 20th birthday.
After a few days of Twitter account “Falcon McBob” with the tag @SpyroTheDragon teasing an announcement (seen above), the news officially broke today. Spyro will be getting the HD remaster it deserves, as all 3 original games from the PS1 will be releasing on the current generation of consoles later this year. The Twitter account officially updated today as well, filling in blank spots with an actual bio and pictures of the beloved purple dragon.
Fans (including myself) have been practically drooling for anything concrete to go on since Crash N.Sane Trilogy was released and Activision said they’d be exploring remasters with other franchises of theirs. As of today, we have everything we could ask for in a reveal.
Release date? Check.
As if that wasn’t enough, they’ve released details regarding the soundtrack and voice acting specifics. The original soundtrack by Stewart Copeland will be “reimagined” for the remaster, and Tom Kenny will be returning as the voice actor for Spyro himself. Some of you might also know him as SpongeBob Squarepants (no, really, Spyro and SpongeBob are one in the same). Although Tom Kenny didn’t voice Spyro in the first game of the trilogy, he’ll be doing so this time around.
Toys for Bob who’ve been handling Spyro within the Skylanders franchise will be developing the remaster, and it looks like they’re trying their absolute best to stay as true to the original as possible. As someone who isn’t a fan of the direction Spyro has taken over the years, this does wonders for my hype on this game.
Seriously, this is tied with Red Dead Redemption 2 for my most hyped video game releases right now. The original Spyro games are my absolute favorite PS1 games, with Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage being my favorite of the 3. All 3 hold some of my most cherished memories playing video games as a kid. I can’t wait to play through them over and over again when it comes out.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy will be generously priced at 39.99$ and released on September 21st, 2018 on PS4/PS4 pro and Xbox One/Xbox One X. In the meantime, watch this trailer a hundred times over.
