Justice League is the new blockbuster superhero movie by Warner Brothers. It is the 5th installment in the DC Comic Universe and the movie is co-directed by Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon. It stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Mamoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, J.K. Simmons, and Henry Cavil. This movie is one of my most anticipated movies of the year so let’s review Justice League.
In Justice League, months after the events of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Batman and Wonder Woman are going around the world to find super powered beings to replace the now dead Superman. During that journey they come across Steppenwolf and his minions who are invading Earth and now we have our movie. So this movie (like B v. S), this movie is getting destroyed on Rotten Tomatoes as it only has a 37% at the time I am writing this review. But I can safely tell you that I am part of that 37% percent because I really enjoyed Justice League. Don’t get me wrong there are major issues I have it but we’ll talk about those later. Let’s start with what I liked.
To start off, I thought the entire cast was really good. Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman both return in their respective roles I thought they were great once again. Batman in particular goes through a huge character arch here and I liked him A LOT more than I did in B v. S. As for the new heroes, (Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg) I really liked them all as well. Flash sticks out to me personally as he’s the kid in the group and brings the humor to the movie. He and Batman form a father/son relationship and that worked for me. As for the other two, Aquaman is a complete badass and Cyborg was a tragic character who’s looking for a second life. Overall the heroes worked and their relationships with one another worked. That is the movies most important jobs and it succeeded at that.
However there are some major problems with this movie so let’s get into it. First off, the villain (Steppenwolf) was just plain bad. There wasn’t any real development with him as he was just a bad guy doing bad things. Next up was the final end battle wasn’t anything that special. I remember the last 20 minutes of The Avengers knocked me on my ass and this didn’t really do that. When the Justice League forms, it should be for an overwhelming cause and I never felt the world was in danger here. Finally, the CGI wasn’t good in this movie. That last battle scene was a CGI fest and it looked fake at sometimes. Cyborg and Steppenwolf didn’t look great either and that’s something that shouldn’t be accepted in a blockbuster like this in 2017.
The one last thing I want to get to is the revel of Superman. It is the worst kept secret in all of Hollywood, but he is in this and was great to have Superman back. I think his revival of him could have been handled better but you can’t deny it’s fantastic to see him again with the rest of the league. So in conclusion, Justice League is good but not great. If there is one word to describe this movie, it is “rushed”. In a movie that it only 2 hours long, a lot of storylines interconnect and it feels bloated at times. When you introduce major players like Flash, Aquaman, and Cybrog (and bring Superman back from the dead) all in one movie, things get put on the backburner like the villain and the story and that shouldn’t be the case here. DC should have come out with more solo superhero movies to build up to this story and it would have felt much more rewarding. That’s why The Avengers is an all-time great movie Justice League is not.
